General access to the Kaipara Harbour was established by locals post war (WWII), via a boat ramp created at the mouth of the Hoteo River – referred to as Mangakura wharf/boat ramp. In the last two decades a concreted boat ramp and floating pontoon has been built and maintained by Auckland Council. Mangakura Boat Club building was built and is supported by locals.
